Torque from the gearbox to the drive wheels is transmitted via drive shafts.

Each shaft consists of three parts: the inner and outer constant velocity joints (CV joints) and the shaft itself.

The splined part of the outer joint is inserted into the wheel hub and secured with a nut. CV joints are lubricated with consistent grease, which is replaced only when the joint is disassembled.

Covers should be checked periodically for damage and grease leakage.

Grease leaks from the joint when the protective cover is torn or the mounting clamps are loosened.

Torn CV joint protective boots must be replaced immediately, otherwise the joints may be damaged. Replacing the boot involves removing the drive shaft.

Vibration and increased noise when starting off, engine braking and on sharp turns occur when constant velocity joints, splined shaft connections are worn out and when wheel mounting bolts are loosened.

Tripod drive shaft: 1 – washer; 2 – thrust ring; 3 – spring ring; 4 – external constant velocity joint; 5 – bolt; 6, 11 – protective covers; 7, 9, 10, 12 – clamps; 8 – drive shaft; 13 – lid; 14 – sealing ring; 15 – retaining ring; 16 – hinge sleeve; 17 – roller; 18 – bolt M10x20, 70 Nm; 19 – hinge housing

The concave side of washer 1 (Fig. 10–1) must be adjacent to the thrust ring.

When installing, it is necessary to use a new spring ring 3. Before installing the CV joint, it is installed in the groove of the drive shaft.

If there are any abrasions or cracks, a new protective cover must be used.

The chamfer on the roller holder splines must face the drive shaft.
