If necessary, shorten "longer" tie rod end (screw deeper into the tie rod). Clean the power steering mechanism and subframe in the area of the bellows. Open and remove spring clamp -3- using hose clamp pliers -VAG 1921-. Remove the clamping clamp -1- and remove the bellows -2- outwards from the power steering mechanism.
Unscrew the nut -1- of the tie rod end -2- until it is flush with the thread of the pin.
When loosening, if necessary, keep it from turning. To protect the thread, leave the nut on the pin screwed in a few turns. Press the tie rod end out of the wheel bearing housing using a ball joint puller -T40010 A-. Then unscrew the nut.
Make sure that both arms of the puller lever are parallel to each other at the moment of maximum force application; correct the position if necessary. Unscrew the steering rod. At the same time, hold the piston rod of the power steering mechanism with a wrench -1-. 2 - spanner - insert -VAG 1923-.
Installation
Install in reverse order. In this case, the following must be taken into account: after each disassembly, replace the corrugated cover. Before installing the seat of the bellows inside, apply steering gear lubricant evenly around the perimeter. Before installing the seat of the corrugated boot on the steering mechanism housing, check the tightness; if the set of seals on the steering mechanism housing is damaged, the steering mechanism must be replaced. Tighten the steering linkage using a spanner insert -VAG 1923- -2-. At the same time, hold the piston rod of the power steering mechanism with a wrench -1 -. Replace spring clamp -3- and clamp clamp-1-.
Installing clamping clamp: Insert new clamping clamp -1- and tighten using clamping pliers -VAG 1682 A-, while setting torque wrench to Nm.
Installation of the corrugated cover: Dimension -a- 2 mm. Pre-rotate the tie rod so that the rod end pin is in the installation position.
Install the tie rod into the wheel bearing housing until it stops. Install the front wheel. It is necessary to adjust the wheel alignment angles. Wheel alignment should be done using a wheel alignment stand recommended by VW/Audi.
