The model is presented in Sedan bodies (model 8EC), Station wagon (Avant, model 8ED) and convertible (model 8HE). Both petrol and diesel longitudinally mounted engines with a capacity of 1.6 to 3.2 litres are used. There are sports modifications S4 (with 5-valve 8-cylinder petrol engines) and RS4 (with 4-valve 8-cylinder FSI petrol engines). In this Manual, sport modifications are considered only in the part of Specifications and routine maintenance procedures; procedures for repairing the power unit and special systems are not considered.
The models are available with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive "Quattro". To transmit torque from the engine, a 6-speed manual transmission, a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual gear shifting ("Tiptronic"), or a continuously variable transmission ("Multitronic"). All-wheel drive models additionally use a cardan shaft, rear differential and rear drive shafts. The brakes are equipped with a vacuum booster. The brake mechanisms are disc, the ABS system with a variety of functions is installed as standard.
The steering is rack and pinion, with hydraulic booster. Active steering "servo-tronic" with a gear ratio depending on the vehicle speed can be installed as additional equipment.
For additional safety, front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger, as well as inflatable curtains and side airbags for rear passengers are used.
