Charge air cooler (Audi 80 B4)

The air entering through the air filter is accelerated and compressed in the turbocharger. The compression of the air, as well as the fact that the turbocharger is driven by hot exhaust gases, heats up the boost air. Its temperature when the engine is running at full load can reach 110°C. To cool it, a charge air cooler is installed between the turbocharger and the intake manifold (intercooler). The intercooler cools the air after it has been compressed by the compressor by approximately 50°C before it is fed to the engine (see illustration 18.0).

Intercooler - Removal. TDI engines only

1. Remove the front bumper.

2. Remove both air hoses from the intercooler

3. Disconnect the thin hose going to the intake manifold pressure sensor

4. Unscrew the cooler holder nuts.

5. Detach the holder.

6. Remove the cooler. If necessary, disconnect the air duct.
