The quality of HD oil is designated by the API system (API — American Petroleum Institute). The designation consists of two letters, the first letter indicates the area of application: S = Service, suitable for gasoline engines; C = Commercial, suitable for diesel engines. The second letter indicates the quality in alphabetical order. The highest quality oil according to API is the SG specification for gasoline engines and CD for diesel engines.
Note: CD motor oils, designated by the manufacturer as exclusively oils for diesel engines, are not suitable for gasoline engines. There are oils that are suitable for both gasoline and diesel engines. In this case, both designations are applied, for example, SF/CD.
VW has approved its own oil standards. Basically, it is necessary to use oils that comply with these standards. These standards are on the packaging. For gasoline engines, oils that operate under high power conditions are required, both VW standards 50000 and 50500 comply with them. You can also fill in VW easy-flowing oil - standards 50000 or all-season VW oil - standards 50101 all-season VW oil - standards 50101 are usually cheaper, if you do not have oil of this specification at hand, you can temporarily use seasonal oil of the API-SF specification.
The diesel engine is permitted to operate on all-season or seasonal oil of the API-CD specification or on oil for operation at high power, permitted for turbodiesel. It is also possible to use all-season oil that complies with VW 50500.
In a turbodiesel engine, you can use oils designed for high-power operation and at the same time meeting the VW 50500 standard. All other oils are not suitable for a turbodiesel.
