External lighting devices: headlight (Audi A6 C5)

The headlight housing is not disassemblable and if there are any defects, the headlight housing must be replaced as a whole. However, if the upper headlight mounting pads are damaged, they can be replaced separately.

Removal

Remove the ground cable from the battery.

Attention

• When disconnecting the wires from the battery terminals, the memory units of the control units erase the data on the recorded faults, so before disconnecting the wires, you must contact a workshop to recall the faults recorded in the memory. After connecting the wires to the battery terminals, it is necessary to activate and reprogram the electric windows, as well as the position of the rear-view mirrors and seats.
• If the car has a radio receiver with a code, then before disconnecting the wires from the terminals from the battery, check that there is a code to reactivate the receiver. Otherwise, the radio receiver can only be put into operation at a specialized station.

Remove the front bumper.

Disconnect the electrical connectors from the rear of the headlight.

Disconnect the electrical connector from the headlight range control actuator motor.

Unscrew two bolts 1 (fig. 14.45) headlight mounts 2.



Remove the long outer Torx bolt 3 (fig. 14.45) headlight mounts.



Turn the headlight towards the center of the car and remove it carefully.

Attention: Before installing a new headlight, turn the plastic nut to set the size, a=24 mm (fig. 14.46), corresponding to the size in the new headlight.

Installation

Rotate the plastic nut to set the size, a=24 mm (fig. 14.46), corresponding to the size in the new headlight. This must be done with the headlight removed.

Install the inner side of the headlight so that the mounting lug 1 (fig. 14.47) on the headlight is installed in the hole of the retainer 2, then install the outer side of the headlight in place.



Check that the gap between the headlight and the body elements is the same on all sides. Adjust the position of the headlight if necessary.



Tighten the headlight mounting bolts to 6 Nm (see fig. 14.45).

Connect all electrical connectors to the headlight.

Install the front bumper.

Connect the ground wire to the battery.

Perform the operations to memorize the positions of seats, mirrors, etc., and also set the time on the clock and enter the code into the radio.

Adjust the headlights.
