Table of contents: How does motor oil work ↓ Disposal of used motor oil ↓
An engine requires oil not only to minimize wear and lubricate moving parts, but also to increase maximum power output and improve fuel economy.
How does motor oil work
Reducing friction
Without oil, the moving surfaces inside your engine will rub against each other, overheat, and melt, quickly causing the engine to fail. Motor oil creates a film that separates these moving parts, preventing wear and overheating.
Heat Sink
Temperatures inside the engine can reach 1000 degrees Celsius. Engine oil circulates in the engine's lubrication system, transferring heat from the hot spots to the sump.
Cleaning the insides of the engine
Good quality motor oils clean the inside of the engine by collecting and dissolving combustion products, storing them until they are caught by the oil filter or removed from the engine when the oil is changed.
Disposal of used motor oil
When storing and disposing of motor oil, always:
- Avoid contact of used oil with skin surfaces - frequent or prolonged contact is harmful to health.
- Dispose of used oil only in designated containers. Never dispose of it in drains or on the ground.
