Shocks due to bumps in the road are absorbed by the tires and springs. Shock absorbers must suppress vibrations of the axles and the body or damp them. Therefore, it would be more correct to call them «vibration dampers». They consist of a single working cylinder in which a working piston connected to a rod can slide up and down. The slave cylinder is surrounded by a second cylinder which serves as a reservoir for the damper's hydraulic oil.
