Checking the temperature sensor (K-, KS-Jetronic, KE-Motronic, Mono-Jetronic, Ecotronic) (Audi 80 B3)

The temperature sensor is located at the top or bottom of the cooling system flange, depending on the engine model. It informs the engine management system about the engine temperature. The resistance of the sensor changes according to the coolant temperature.



Disconnect the plug from the temperature sensor and measure the resistance relative to ground with an ohmmeter. On a 5-cylinder engine with KE-Jetronic, check the resistance of the contacts relative to ground in turn; contact 1 for control unit KE, contact 2 for control unit VEZ.

Compare the obtained values with those required in the diagram. Example: At a coolant temperature of +20 C, the device should show a resistance of 2-3 kOhm, at +80°C - 290+370 Ohm.

Caution: Always test at 2 different temperatures. If necessary, remove the temperature sensor and heat it in a water bath.

If the resistance is outside the acceptable range, replace the sensor.
