Checking the position of the gear shift lever

Engage 1st gear.

Move the gear shift lever all the way to the left.

Release the lever, measuring the amount of its movement, which should be within 5-10 mm.

Engage 5th gear.

Move the shift lever to the right until it stops. Release the lever and simultaneously measure the amount of its movement, which should be within 5-10 mm.

Adjusting the gear shift drive

Working from underneath the vehicle, loosen the gear shift rod fork.

Remove the gear shift knob and protective cover.

Remove the gearshift lever ball cap and align the alignment marks.

Install the VW 3057 adjustment template.

Pull the gearshift lever and drive slider forward as far as it will go. Move the gearshift lever and drive slider to the right as far as it will go (via the V transmission line). Tighten the knurled nut securing the drive slider.

Move the gear shift lever to the III gear line. Move the gear shift lever to the left to the III and IV gear line.

Working from underneath the vehicle, secure the shift rod fork.

Crush the adjustment template and check the amount of movement of the gearshift lever as described above. If it differs slightly from the nominal, refine the adjustment by moving the cap of the spherical head of the gearshift lever in the oval slots for the mounting bolts.
