Checking the shift lever position
Engage 1st gear.
Move the gear lever all the way to the left.
Release the lever, measuring the amount of its movement, which should be within 5-10 mm.
Engage V gear.
Move the shift lever to the right as far as it will go. Release the lever and at the same time measure the amount of its movement, which should be within 5-10 mm.
Adjustment of a drive of a gear change
Working from below the vehicle, loosen the gearshift linkage fork.
Remove the shift knob and protective cover.
Loosen the shift knob cap and align the alignment marks.
Install adjustment template VW 3057.
Push the shift lever and drive slide forward as far as it will go. Move the gearshift lever and the drive slider to the right as far as it will go (V transmission line). Tighten the knurled nut securing the drive slider.
Move the gearshift lever to the 3rd gear line. Move the shift lever to the left to the line III and IV gears.
Working from below the vehicle, secure the gearshift linkage yoke.
Crush the adjustment template and check the amount of movement of the gear lever, as indicated above. If it differs slightly from the nominal, refine the adjustment by moving the cap of the spherical head of the gear lever in the oval slots for the mounting bolts.
