Turbocharging is used to improve the filling of cylinders. In other words: turbocharging helps the engine fill the combustion chamber on the intake stroke with fresh gas (fuel-air mixture). This filling is achieved by a naturally aspirated engine by suction pistons moving down in the cylinders, just a turbo engine does it better. A small, fast-response turbocharger was used to provide early high torque over a wide rev range.
