Diagonal tie rod — removal, overhaul and installation (Audi 80 B3)

1. Block the front wheels, then jack up the rear of the vehicle and support it on axle stands. If necessary, remove the rear wheels for better access.

2. Loosen and remove the bolts that attach the diagonal tie rod to the underbody and rear axle, noting that the bolt heads are adjacent to the tie rod (photo). Remove the tie rod from under the car.





3. Check the condition of the rod and bushings. If necessary, the bushings can be replaced using a long bolt, metal pipe and washers. Before installation, immerse the bushings in soapy water.

4. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. But do not fully tighten the mounting bolts until the weight of the car is installed on the suspension.
