Instead of a manual transmission, the AUDI A3 can be equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission (AT). When starting off, the AT functions as a regular clutch, and when driving, it shifts gears.
The main units of the AT are: torque converter, planetary gearbox and hydraulic or electronic control system. To switch to another gear ratio in the planetary gearbox, hydraulically driven disc brakes and disc clutch are used.
The torque converter functions like a hydraulic clutch. Its job is to provide clutch when starting off and changing gears.
The control of the pressure during switching is carried out by an electronic device instead of hydraulics used in a conventional manual transmission. Thus, there is more complete information for better control of the switching process, which makes it possible to select the optimal gear ratio depending on the vehicle operating mode and the driver's desire, which, in turn, improves the quality of the gear shifting process.
There are no manual programs "Economy" or "Sport". The control unit recognizes from the speed at which the pedal is pressed whether the driver wants to drive "sporty" or "economically" and controls the shift point accordingly. The shift control also takes into account the driving resistance, for example whether the car is moving uphill or downhill, whether there is a trailer and a headwind.
If there are any faults in the signal circuits of the sensors or electromagnetic valves, the system switches to the emergency driving program, and at the same time the faults are recorded in the fault memory. They can be read from the device memory later.
To evaluate the work and to correctly troubleshoot, appropriate experience with AT and qualifications are required.
Warning: Vehicles with automatic transmission may be towed for a distance of up to 50 km at a speed of no more than 50 km/h. When towing on a transporter, the front of the vehicle must be raised.
