Seat belts
Warning: Fasten your seat belts before every ride, incl. and around the city! This also applies to rear seat passengers. Pregnant women should also always wear seat belts.
Warning: The protective effect of seat belts depends to a large extent on the location of their tapes after fastening. See below for instructions on how to properly fasten your seat belts.
Why wear seat belts?
It is known that seat belts are an effective means of protection in road traffic accidents.
In a frontal collision, unbelted occupants lean forward and hit (as shown in the illustration) o various parts of the car interior, such as, for example, the steering wheel, instrument panel, windshield.
The common belief about protecting the body with the hands in the event of a light collision is incorrect. In a collision, even with a slight speed, forces that are insurmountable by hands arise.
Rear seat passengers also need to buckle up, as in the event of a collision, they move uncontrollably in the passenger compartment. An unfastened passenger in the rear seat is a danger not only to himself, but also to the front passengers.
Warning: Be sure to remember the following:
Warning: The belt tape must not be caught, twisted or rubbed against sharp edges.
Warning: Never fasten two people with the same seat belt (also children).
Warning: The maximum protective effect of the belts is achieved only in the correct position of the seat - refer to subsection seats.
Warning: The webbing must not press on hard or brittle objects (glasses, ballpoint pens, etc.), as it may cause injury.
Warning: Layered loose clothing (e.g. a coat over a jacket) hinders landing and interferes with the operation of seat belts.
Warning: The belt buckle must be inserted into your seat buckle.
Warning: Keep the belt tape clean, as due to heavy contamination, the operation of the automatic belts may be impaired.
Warning: Do not block the lock slot with paper, etc. debris, as this will prevent the clasp from snapping into place.
Warning: The seat belts must not be removed or modified in any way, or repaired by yourself.
Warning: Damaged or stretched seat belts due to emergency operation must be replaced by an Audi workshop.
Also, check the attachment points of the straps.
Three-point automatic seat belts
Automatic seat belts provide complete freedom of movement with their smooth tension. However, when braking hard, they are blocked.
Automatic locks the belts also when accelerating the car, when driving on mountain roads and when cornering.
In addition, it is possible to permanently lock the front passenger belts, as well as the belts of the rear side seats for attaching child seats.
Warning: The front seatbacks can only be folded back if the diagonal band is in contact with the chest. Otherwise, the protective effect of the belts may be lost.
Warning: The split backrest* of the rear seat must be securely fastened in order to ensure the protective effect of the middle seat belt - refer to subsection seats.
Pyrotechnic belt tensioner
In the event of dangerous frontal and side collisions, the three-point seat belts are automatically tensioned. In even more severe collisions, the airbags are additionally deployed.
The pyrotechnic belt tensioners do not activate in rear collisions and rollovers.
Warning: All work on the system, as well as the dismantling and installation of its components for other repair operations, must be carried out only by an Audi workshop.
Warning: The system is a single actuation. After operation, it must be replaced.
Warning: Smoke is emitted when the pyrotechnic tensioners are activated. Smoke does not indicate a car fire.
Fastening with 3-point harness
Grasp the buckle of the belt, gently pull the tape, lay it over the chest and waist and insert the clasp into the slot of your lock until you hear a click (pull the strap and make sure the lock is locked!).
The diagonal part of the belt should pass through the middle of the shoulder (refer to illustration) and in any case do not cover the neck. At the same time, it should fit snugly against the chest.
The waist band should always fit snugly around the hips. Slide it down and tighten if necessary.
Pregnant women should also always wear seat belts.
At the same time, the waist band of the belt should be located as low as possible so that there is no pressure on the stomach.
Belt height adjustment
For the front seats, it is possible to adjust the position of the diagonal belt belt.
To adjust, slide up or down the reverse buckle slider so that the diagonal band is about mid-shoulder level as shown in the previous illustration, but never wraps around the neck.
After adjusting, pull on the strap to make sure the buckle is secure.
Three-point harness release
The belt is unfastened by pressing a finger on the red button of the lock. In this case, the fastener is pushed out of the socket under the action of the spring.
To facilitate the operation of the automatic retraction of the belts, pull the buckle back by hand. To hold the belt in a comfortable position, a plastic button embedded in the belt tape is used.
Belt*
The middle seat can also be equipped with a lap belt.
The use of the lap belt is the same as that of the three-point automatic belt.
For fastening, the belt is pulled out in one continuous movement, and its clasp is inserted into the slot of the corresponding lock until it clicks into place (be sure to pull on the strap to make sure the lock is locked).
When the belt is properly fastened, the red button is located on the outside of the belt buckle.
The belt must always fit snugly around the waist.
Warning: Pull out the belt only if the belt has been completely retracted by the retractor.
Warning: To release the belt, press the red buckle button and let the belt retract into the retractor.
Airbags
In dangerous frontal collisions, the airbags, together with the three-point seat belts, provide additional protection to the head and chest area of the driver and front passenger.
Side and head airbags* reduce the risk of injury to occupants in the impact zone in severe side collisions.
The airbag is not a replacement for seat belts, but is part of the vehicle's overall passive safety concept.
You should always keep in mind that the maximum protective effect of the airbag system is only achieved when interacting with fastened seat belts.
Therefore, always fasten your seat belts.
System Components
The main components are:
- electronic control device (control device)
- both front airbags
- side airbags
- left and right head cushions*
Pilot lamp
The readiness of the system for operation is electronically controlled and displayed using a control lamp "AIRBAG".
Each time the ignition is switched on, the control lamp comes on for a few seconds "AIRBAG", which should turn off after the self-diagnosis process is completed. If the lamp does not go out or lights up while driving, then the system is damaged. Refer to subsection Control and measuring devices. Warning and diagnostic systems.
Warning: In the event of a malfunction, the system must be checked by an Audi workshop immediately. Otherwise, in the event of an accident, there is a risk that the airbags or seat belt pretensioners will not deploy normally.
Airbag modules
Description of the location of the airbags (cushion with gas generator) below.
Driver front airbag located in the steering wheel trim panel. Location marked "AIRBAG".
Warning: The maximum protective effect of the belts and the airbag system is only achieved when positioned correctly on the seat.
The front passenger airbag is located in the instrument panel above the glove box. Location marked "AIRBAG".
The side airbags are located in the backrest trim of the front (refer to illustration) seats. Location marked "AIRBAG".
Head airbags* located on the left and right above the doors in the ceiling. Installation locations are marked "AIRBAG".
Head cushions, when opened, cover the glass area of the front and rear doors on both sides.
Under what conditions do airbags deploy?
The airbags for the driver and front passenger are deployed in dangerous frontal collisions.
In severe side collisions, the side airbags are deployed together with the headbag* of the corresponding side of the vehicle.
In special emergency situations, both the front and side airbags may deploy, together with the appropriate head airbag*.
The airbags do not deploy in light frontal and side collisions, rear-end collisions, and vehicle rollovers. In such situations, passengers are traditionally protected by fastened seat belts.
There are no uniform criteria for airbag deployment in each specific situation. This is due to the extremely different specifics of accidents. An important role, for example, is played by such factors as the properties of the collision object with the car (hard, soft), collision angle, vehicle speed, etc.
A decisive condition for the deployment of the airbag system in the event of a collision is the deceleration process detected by the control unit. The airbags do not deploy in a collision when the vehicle deceleration values are below the programmed values of the control device, although the vehicle may be quite deformed due to an accident.
Front airbags
When the system is triggered, the airbags are filled with working gas and deployed, as shown in the illustration.
Contact with a fully inflated airbag dampens occupant movement and reduces the risk of injury to the head and upper torso.
The specially designed inflatable cushion design provides for a controlled release of the working gas under the influence of the driver or passenger in order to soften the reception of the head and torso. As a result of this, the airbag deflates after it has been deployed, as a result of which the forward view is again freed.
The airbags inflate in hundredths of a second and at high speed to provide additional protection in the event of an accident.
At the same time, the pillow develops a very large force, which can cause injury to passengers who do not occupy a direct position on the seat or if any objects are in the airbag coverage area.
When the airbag is inflated, fine dust is generated. This is normal and does not indicate a vehicle fire.
Be sure to heed the warnings below:
Warning: Assume a normal, upright posture and maintain a distance from the steering wheel/instrument panel in order to achieve the maximum protective effect when the airbags are deployed. In addition, the seats must always be adjusted exactly to height (refer to subsection seats).
Warning: If you do not buckle your seat belts, lean forward while driving, or assume an incorrect seating position, you may be at increased risk of injury when the airbag system deploys in the event of an accident.
Warning: Never carry children in the front seats without the correct stowage and tension systems. Deployment of the airbag system in an accident could result in serious injury or death. For more information, see the section "Rules for the safe transportation of children".
Warning: There must be no other persons between the seated in front and the airbag area (for example, children), animals or objects.
Warning: The steering wheel trim panel and the surface of the cushion module in the front passenger instrument panel must not be pasted, covered with cloth or otherwise treated. Wipe it only with a dry or damp cloth.
Warning: Do not attach any objects to the airbag module trim, such as cup holders, phone holders.
Warning: The protective action of the airbag system is only enough for one accident. After a single operation, the entire system must be replaced.
Warning: Do not make any modifications to the cushions.
All work on the cushion system, as well as the dismantling and installation of its components due to other repair operations (e.g. removing the steering wheel), only be carried out by an Audi workshop.
Side airbags
When the system is activated, the airbags are filled with working gas.
The airbag inflates in hundredths of a second and at high speed in order to provide additional protection in case of an accident.
A fully inflated airbag, due to the controlled release of the working gas under the influence of the load, dampens the lateral movements of passengers. As a result, the risk of damage to the upper body from the side of the doors is reduced.
Be sure to heed the warnings below:
Warning: If you do not buckle your seat belts, lean forward while driving, or assume an incorrect seating position, you may be at increased risk of injury when the side airbags deploy in the event of an accident.
Warning: To achieve the maximum protective effect of the side airbags, always assume the correct seating position with the seat belts fastened.
Warning: Your head should never be in the airbag outlet area. Otherwise, you could be seriously injured in an accident. This is especially true for children.
Warning: There must be no other persons between the seated in front and the airbag area (for example, children), animals or objects.
In addition, foreign objects, such as drink cup holders, must not be attached to the doors in order to trigger the side airbags.
Warning: Only light clothing should be hung on the coat hooks. Pockets should not contain heavy and sharp-angled objects.
Warning: Seat covers not approved by Audi must not be used under any circumstances. The cushion opens from the back of the seat. Therefore, the protective function of your side airbag is significantly impaired if seat covers or upholstery are not matched.
Warning: Damage to the original seat upholstery or seams at the location of the side airbag module should be repaired immediately by an Audi workshop.
Warning: Leaning the child forward or incorrect seating position while driving exposes children to an increased risk of injury in the event of an accident. This applies in particular to children traveling in the front passenger seat when the airbag system is deployed in the event of an accident. This can result in life-threatening or even fatal injuries.
Warning: The protective action of the airbag system is only enough for one accident. After a single operation, the system must be replaced.
Warning: Do not make any changes to the cushion system components.
Warning: All work on the side airbag system, as well as the removal and installation of its components due to other repair operations (e.g. removing the front seat), only be carried out by an Audi workshop. Otherwise, functional violations of the security system are possible.
Head airbags (SIDEQUARD) *
Deployment of the head airbag reduces the risk of head injury from impact with the glass, as well as with the door pillars of passengers sitting at the door. In addition, the head cushion protects against the penetration of any objects from the outside, such as glass fragments.
When the side airbags are deployed, the corresponding head airbag deploys automatically.
In this case, the head cushion closes, as shown in the illustration, the side windows and door pillars and is thus both effective protection for front and rear passengers.
To ensure this additional protective function, no objects are allowed to be in the area of \u200b\u200bthe airbags.
Be sure to heed the warnings below:
Warning: Only light clothing should be hung on the coat hooks. Pockets should not contain heavy and sharp-angled objects. Also, hangers are not allowed (hangers) for clothes.
Warning: There must be no other persons between the seated in front and the airbag coverage area (for example, children), animals or objects.
In addition, passengers are not allowed to stick their heads and hands out of the windows. In addition, for the purpose of unhindered opening of the head pillows, no objects are allowed in the exit area.
Warning: Do not retract the sun visors to the side windows if, for example, objects such as a ballpoint pen, garage opener, etc. are attached to the visors. If the head bag inflates, these objects may cause injury to you.
Warning: Only genuine Audi sunblinds may be fitted on the rear doors.
Warning: Do not make any changes to the cushion system components.
Warning: The protective action of the airbags is only enough for one accident. After a single operation, the system must be replaced.
Warning: All work on the head cushion system, as well as the removal and installation of its components due to other repair operations (e.g. ceiling lining), only be carried out by an Audi workshop. Otherwise, functional violations of the security system are possible.
You must also remember:
The airbag system must be replaced by an Audi workshop no more than 14 years after the date of manufacture. date of manufacture (month year) can be found on the rating plate of the service book.
In order to maintain the system's performance, be sure to observe this period.
In case of replacement of components (modules) airbags ahead of time (for example, as a result of an accident), the new replacement date for these components is determined and confirmed in the service book by the relevant marks of your Audi workshop.
When selling the car, give the buyer the full documentation of the car. Remember that it also includes the documentation for the deactivated front passenger airbag!
When scrapping the vehicle or disposing of individual components of the air bag system and pyrotechnic belt tensioners, the relevant safety regulations known to Audi workshops must be observed.
Deactivating airbags
Deactivation of the airbags is provided only in certain cases, for example:
- if it is necessary in exceptional cases to install a child seat on the front passenger seat, in which the child is positioned with the back in the direction of travel, if the minimum distance is not maintained despite the correctly installed driver's seat (25 cm) between the center of the steering wheel and the sternum,
- if it is necessary to install special devices in the steering wheel area in case of physical disabilities,
- when installing other seats (e.g. orthopedic seats without side airbags).
At an Audi workshop, you can find out how to deactivate the airbags in your car. The following is a description of how to deactivate the front passenger airbag from the factory.
At Audi workshops, a deactivated airbag is marked with a sticker in the area of the instrument panel (with the front passenger airbag deactivated).
When deactivating the front passenger airbag using the key switch* (refer to the following resources) signal lamp constantly on "PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF".
Return disabled airbags to service as soon as possible to perform their protective function.
Deactivating the front passenger airbag when installing a child seat
Deactivate the front passenger airbag if it is absolutely necessary to install a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat.
However, we recommend that you mount the child seat only on the rear seat to keep the front passenger airbag active.
Return the front passenger airbag to service at an Audi workshop or using the key switch* as soon as the child seat is no longer needed.
When installing child seats, be sure to follow the recommendations in the section "Rules for the safe transportation of children".
Warning: If it is necessary in exceptional cases to transport a child in front using a child seat in which the child is positioned with his back in the direction of travel, first deactivate the front passenger airbag at an Audi workshop or using the key switch located in the glove box. Otherwise, there is a risk of severe injury or death. Contact an Audi workshop for advice.
Front passenger airbag switch*
The front passenger airbag must be deactivated using the key switch shown in the illustration and located in the glove box if, in exceptional cases, it is necessary to install a child seat on the front passenger seat, on which the child is positioned with his back in the direction of travel.
To disable the front passenger airbag, turn the vehicle key to the (0).
The airbag is switched on by turning the key to position (I).
When the front passenger's airbag is deactivated, the indicator lamp shown at the top lights up permanently.
Additionally, watch the control lamp "AIRBAG" on the dashboard, refer to subsection Control and measuring devices. Warning and diagnostic systems.
Warning: When the front passenger airbag is disabled, all other airbags are active.
Warning: Reactivate the front passenger airbag immediately if it is no longer necessary to use the child seat for the airbag's protective function.
Warning: The correct position of the key switch is the responsibility of the driver.
Warning: The front passenger airbag can be deactivated at an Audi workshop if your car is not factory equipped with a deactivation system for this airbag. Refer to the materials above.
Rules for the safe transportation of children
Accident statistics show that children are safer in the rear seat than in the front passenger seat. Children under the age of 12 must generally be carried in the back seat. Depending on age, height and body weight, when transporting them, you should use special children's or already mounted on the car seat belts. For safety reasons, install the child restraint system on the middle or furthest rear seat from the driver.
Warning: Everyone must be seated while driving. This is especially true for children.
Warning: Never allow a child to stand in the vehicle or kneel in the seat while driving. In the event of an accident, the child could be seriously injured.
Warning: Leaning a child forward or sitting incorrectly in the seat while driving exposes children to an increased risk of injury in the event of an accident. This applies in particular to children traveling in the front passenger seat when the airbag system is deployed in the event of an accident. This can result in life-threatening or even fatal injuries.
Warning: To avoid injuries to the abdomen and neck, children under 150 cm in height must not be fastened with a standard seat belt without the use of a special child belt system.
Warning: Under no circumstances should children, including infants, be carried on an adult's lap.
You may only use child restraint systems that are officially approved and suitable for your child.
With regard to systems for laying and tensioning child seat belts, the ECE-R 44 standard adopted by the UN Economic Commission for Europe, according to which such systems are divided into 5 groups:
- Group 0: up to 10 kg (up to about 9 months)
- Group 0+: up to 13 kg (up to about 18 months)
- Group 1: 9–18 kg (approximately 8 months to 4 years)
- Group 2: 15–25 kg (approximately 3 to 7 years)
- Group 3: 22–36 kg (approximately 6 to 12 years old)
Stowage and tensioning systems for child belts, tested according to ECE-R 44, are provided with a confirmation mark (big "E", placed in a circle, below the control number). The label with the marking is rigidly attached to the seat.
Group 0 / 0+
Infants up to approx. 9 months / 10 kg and up to 18 months / 13 kg are best suited for child seats that can be converted for lying down if necessary (refer to illustration).
Warning: If it is necessary in exceptional cases to transport a child to the front passenger seat using a child seat in which the child is positioned with his back in the direction of travel, first deactivate the front passenger airbag at an Audi workshop or using the key switch located in the glove box. Otherwise, there is a risk of severe injury or death. Contact an Audi workshop for advice.
Return the front passenger airbag to service immediately at an Audi workshop or with the key switch* if the child seat is no longer needed.
Group 1
For infants and young children up to approx. 4 years / 18 kg, seats with a fixing table are most suitable (refer to illustration) or those on which the child is located with his back in the direction of travel.
Warning: Reset the front passenger airbag immediately at an Audi workshop or with the key switch* if the child seat is no longer needed.
Group 2
For children aged approx. 7 years / 25 kg, a combination of child seats with diagonal lap belts is the best choice.
Warning: The diagonal webbing of the belt must pass approximately through the middle of the shoulder and in no case wrap around the neck, but must fit snugly against the chest. The waistband of the harness should wrap around the child's hips, not the stomach.
Group 3
For children aged approximately 7 years and older, up to 150 cm tall, seat cushions combined with diagonal lap belts are most comfortable.
Warning: The diagonal webbing of the belt must pass approximately through the middle of the shoulder and in no case wrap around the neck, fitting securely against the chest. The waist band of the belt should cover the hips, not the stomach.
Warning: Children taller than 150 cm can use seat belts without airbags.
Warning: Use child seat belt systems from Audi Genuine. Under the general name "Huckerpack" systems are offered for all age categories. These systems comply with the ECE-R 44 standard and have also been developed and tested for use in Audi vehicles.
Warning: Be especially careful when using child seat belt systems that are threaded into the seat belts already in the vehicle. Make sure that the bolts are tightened to the end with a force of 50 Nm.
Warning: Check that the belts are correctly applied. Also, make sure that the webbing of the belt cannot be damaged by the sharp edges of the buckles.
Warning: One set of child seat belts can only fasten one child at a time.
When fitting and using child restraints, observe the legal provisions as well as the instructions of the manufacturer of the particular system.
Child seat lock
For fastening a child seat, a permanent locking of the three-point seat belts can be carried out.
Implementation of blocking
Secure the child seat with a three-point harness according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Completely remove the diagonal webbing of the seat belt after fastening.
Loosen the strap and make sure it is snug against the child seat. The tape should not come out backwards. Try pulling the belt sharply by hand. He mustn't move!
Unlock
Press the red button in the belt buckle. At the same time, the belt tape retracts and the belt is released.
Installing child seats on the front passenger seat
For safety reasons, we recommend the installation of child seat belt stowage and tension systems in the rear seats. When installing child seats on the front passenger seat, due to the presence of a cushion, consider the following:
Warning: When the front passenger airbag is activated, a child seat must not be installed in its place, in which the child sits with his back in the direction of travel. The child seat is in the area of the front passenger airbag. Therefore, there is a risk of serious or fatal injury to the child if the airbag is deployed.
Warning: When using a forward facing child seat, the front passenger seat must be moved all the way back.
Warning: If it is necessary in exceptional cases to transport a child to the front passenger seat using a child seat in which the child is positioned with his back in the direction of travel, first deactivate the front passenger airbag using the key switch located in the glove box or at an Audi workshop.
Warning: When the front passenger's airbag is deactivated, the passenger's side airbag remains in the active position.
Warning: Reset the front passenger airbag immediately at an Audi workshop or with the key switch* if the child seat is no longer needed.
Child safety and side airbag
Audi side airbags provide additional protection to occupants in the event of a side collision.
To provide this protective function in the event of a collision, the side airbag must deploy in milliseconds.
At the same time, the airbag develops a very large force, which can cause injury to passengers who do not occupy a straight posture or when any objects are in the airbag coverage area.
This is especially true for children if they are not transported in accordance with current regulations.
WARNING: To prevent serious injury, always use seat belt stowage and tension systems that are appropriate for the age, height, and weight of your child.
Child seat anchor (system "ISOFIX") *
On each of the side rear seats, between the backrest and the seat, there are two holders (IN) for attaching a child seat using the system "ISOFIX".
Child seats with attachment system "ISOFIX" can be purchased from an Audi workshop.
Before installing the child seat, install on the holders (IN) supplied "child seat" receiving nests (A) (refer to illustration). This will prevent damage to the seat upholstery.
The illustration shows the receptacles already installed with the child seat locking levers inserted into them.
Currently, child seats with a fastening system "ISOFIX" are offered for children weighing between 9 and 18 kg. This corresponds to the age of 9 months to 4 years.
A detailed installation guide is included with the child seat.
Warning: It is possible to retrofit a child seat anchorage system "ISOFIX" at the Audi workshop.
