Table of contents: Special instructions for the driver… ↓ Special instructions for seat belt… ↓ Accident without Airbag deployment ↓
Note: Pyrotechnic components include: Airbag modules. Seat belt tensioners. Seat belt force limiters (depending on the configuration). Battery emergency switches (depending on the set.)

Testing, installation and repair work may only be performed by trained specialists. There are no replacement intervals for the Airbag. Never use a voltage indicator, voltmeter or ohmmeter for testing. Pyrotechnic parts may only be tested in the installed state using a diagnostic kit approved by the manufacturer. When working on pyrotechnic components and on the Airbag control unit "J234", the battery ground wire must be disconnected with the ignition ON. Then close the negative terminal. After disconnecting the battery, a waiting period of 10 seconds must be observed. Connect the battery only with the ignition ON. In this case, no one must be in the vehicle interior. Exception: vehicles with a battery in the vehicle interior. In this case, do not be in the area where the Airbag and seat belts may be triggered. Observe measures after disconnecting the battery. Before working on pyrotechnic components of the safety system, for example, disconnecting the el. connector, the mechanic must remove the static charge from himself. The electrostatic charge is removed by touching grounded metal elements, e.g. briefly touching the door lock. After contact with the pyrotechnic parts of the security system that have been triggered, hands must be washed. Pyrotechnic units must not be opened or repaired; it is essential to use only new units (risk of injury). It is prohibited to install pyrotechnic parts that are damaged or parts that have fallen onto a hard surface. Pyrotechnic units must be installed immediately after being removed from the transport container. When not in use, put the pyrotechnic unit back into the transport container. It is prohibited to leave the pyrotechnic unit unattended. When connecting pyrotechnic parts of the restraint system, only the mechanic working with them must be in the car. Pyrotechnic parts must not be lubricated or treated with cleaning or other similar agents. If contaminants such as oil, grease, varnish, paint and solvent penetrate the fabric, always replace the module. Pyrotechnic parts must not be exposed to temperatures above 100°C, even for a short time.

Special instructions for the driver and front passenger airbag

When removed, store the driver and front passenger Airbag modules with the soft side facing up. When replacing Airbag modules, be sure to follow the following procedure:
  • 1. Remove the old Airbag and place it with the cushion side facing up;
  • 2. Remove the new Airbag from the shipping container and place it with the cushion side facing up;
  • 3. Place the old module immediately into the transport container;
  • 4. Install the new Airbag module.

Special instructions for seat belt tensioners

Handle the seat belt tensioner modules with extreme care when removing and installing. There is a high risk of injury if the seat belt tensioner modules are handled incorrectly. Seat belt tensioners with mechanical damage (chips, cracks) must be replaced. The open end of the pretensioner must never point towards people. When connecting the seat belt tensioner module, all mechanical parts, including the 3-point seat belt components, must be properly secured. If connecting the seat belt tensioner is not possible due to limited installation space, the seat belt must be completely retracted before installation. This will reduce the risk while observing the further safety instructions. These instructions primarily include disconnecting the battery and having the mechanic discharge any electrostatic charge before connecting the seat belt tensioner. Depending on the force of the impact, the seat belt tensioner may be triggered, but the tension limiter will not. These components must be treated as if they were not functioning!

Accident without Airbag deployment

If the Airbag "K75" indicator lamp does not indicate a malfunction, then there is no need to change the Airbag pyrotechnic components. Perform a separate check of the seat belts.
