Removal and installation the steering column switch (Audi A3 8L)

The steering column switch contains both turn signal/high beam and windscreen wiper switches.

Removal



1. Disconnect the negative (–) battery cable with the ignition off.

Warning: This will erase information from electronic memory units, such as the radio code. Without the code, the radio can only be switched on by the manufacturer or an AUDI service station. Therefore, please read the materials in the subsection Entering the radio code.


Warning: Be sure to read the safety precautions for using the airbag, and refer to the subsection Steering.


2. Remove the driver's side airbag assembly, referring to subsection Removal and installation the airbag unit.

3. Remove the steering wheel, refer to the subsection Removal and installation the steering wheel.

3. Remove the steering wheel, refer to the subsection Removal and installation the steering wheel.


4. Disconnect the steering column adjustment mechanism handle –1–.

5. Remove 2 Phillips head screws –4– and Allen head screw –2– (4 mm key).

6. Remove the 2 mounting screws –3– using a thin, long screwdriver.

7. Remove the upper and lower parts of the steering column switch trim.

7. Remove the upper and lower parts of the steering column switch trim.


8. Disconnect connector –1–.



9. Loosen the Allen screw –2– (5 mm) until the steering column switch can move slightly.

10. Carefully disconnect the electrical connections from the steering column switch.

Warning: When removing the stalk, the spring remains on the stalk. Make sure the spring does not twist and remains in its center position.


11. Remove the steering column switch from the column and set it aside.

Installation



Installation


1. Place the steering column switch –2– onto the steering column without securing it.

2. Put on the steering wheel.

3. First secure the steering column switch –2– with the Allen screw –3– to the steering column so that the distance to the steering wheel is a = 3 mm.

4. Remove the steering wheel again and perform further installation in the reverse order of removal.

5. Install the steering wheel, refer to subsection Removal and installation the steering wheel.

6. Install the airbag, refer to subsection Removal and installation the airbag unit.

7. Connect the battery ground (–) cable. Caution: Activate the electric window lifter high-altitude automatics, and also set the clock and enter the radio code, refer to subsection Entering the radio code.
