Examination
Warning: The operation of lifting and placing the vehicle on stands is dangerous! Therefore, before carrying out the operation, read the subsection car jacking.
1. Raise the front of the car and place on stands.
2. Forcefully press the lever up and pull down. At the same time, keep an eye on the support.
3. Press hard on the wheel from the bottom out and in. At the same time, keep an eye on the ball joint.
4. In both checks, no appreciable play in the ball joint is allowed. Take into account the presence of play in the wheel bearing or suspension strut support.
5. Check for damage in the rubber casing. If there is damage, the hinge should be replaced.
Withdrawal
6. Remove the suspension strut together with the wheel bearing housing, refer to subsection Removal and installation of an amortization rack and the case of the wheel bearing.
7. Loosen the ball joint nut with a socket wrench or AUDI-3077 tool. If the pin turns, hold it with an angle wrench (A) size Torx T30.
8. Press the ball joint pin with a puller -1- eg Hazet 779 from the wheel bearing housing. When doing this, be careful not to damage the rubber boot.
Installation
1. Attach the ball joint with a new self-locking nut to the wheel bearing housing. Tighten the nut to a torque of 45 Nm, holding the pin from turning with a Torx T30 wrench.
2. Reinstall the suspension strut and wheel bearing housing, refer to subsection Removal and installation of an amortization rack and the case of the wheel bearing.
Wheel bearing
Signs of a damaged bearing are noise on tight turns and heavy wheel travel when the brake is released.
The wheel bearings have a very tight fit in the steering knuckle. They can only be installed using the appropriate special tool. This work should be carried out in the conditions of SRT. To replace the wheel bearing, the wheel housing must be removed. The bearing is destroyed by pressing out and must be replaced.
