Shock absorber strut elements
Warning: Spring is under load, compressed by device, Danger!

- 1 - shock absorber. Replace only as a set
- 2 - compression stroke buffer
- 3 - protective cover
- 4 - coil spring.
- 5 - plate
- 6 - thrust bearing
- 7 - shock absorber support
- 8 - nut, 60 Nm. Replace after each unscrewing. Unscrews only after the spring is compressed by the device.
- 9 - centering cup, 60 Nm
- 10 - nut, 60 Nm. Self-locking, be sure to replace.
Removal
1. Remove the shock absorber strut, refer to the subsection Removal and installation the shock absorber strut and wheel bearing housing.
Warning: The spring is under high pressure. To be able to remove the shock absorber, the spring must be compressed with a suitable tool.
Warning: The shock absorber nut should only be loosened when the spring is compressed by the device!

2. Compress the spring with the appropriate tool –1– and shoes –2–.
Warning: Insert the tool into the spring coils so that it grips the coils securely and the tool cannot slip out. The spring is compressed with great force, so use only a secure tool. Never tighten the spring with wire. Risk of accident!
3. Loosen the shock absorber strut mounting nut, holding it against turning with a 7 mm socket wrench. The nut requires an offset open-end wrench. If using tool –3– (AUDI–3186 or HAZET 2593–21 in a set with 2100–07), a regular torque wrench can be used for tightening.
4. Slowly unload the spring, remove individual parts.
5. Check the shock absorber, refer to the subsection Checking the shock absorber.
6. If necessary, dispose of the shock absorber, refer to the subsection Shock absorber disposal.
Installation
Warning: Springs of different accuracy classes are available. Only those of the same marking should be used (color coding).
1. The new spring is protected from corrosion by varnish. Before installing the springs, check the integrity of the varnish coating and restore it if necessary.

2. Compress the spring with a suitable tool and insert it into the shock absorber. Make sure that the end of the spring is adjacent to the stop of the lower plate.
3. Assemble the shock absorber strut as shown in the illustration Shock absorber strut elements.
4. Tighten the new nut to 60 Nm while holding the rod with a 7 mm socket wrench.
Warning: To install the torque wrench, the AUDI–3186 or HAZET 2593–21 in combination with the 2100–07 can be used as a holding tool.
5. Slowly release the spring.
6. Install the shock absorber, refer to the subsection Removal and installation the shock absorber strut and wheel bearing housing.
