The car comes with two main keys A (Fig. 1–1) and one repair IN and backup WITH. Additionally, they issue a keychain WITH with a key number and a hidden secret code for the anti-theft system.
Warnings: Always remove the key from the ignition whenever you leave the vehicle, even for a short time. This is especially important when children are left in the vehicle. They may start the engine or operate an electrical device, such as a window lifter, which could cause injury or create an emergency situation.
Remove the key from the ignition only after the vehicle has come to a complete stop to avoid engaging the steering lock while driving.
Main keys A suitable for all locks. Depending on the vehicle's configuration, the main keys have a backlight or a transmitter for infrared remote control.
To turn on the backlight, press the button in the center of the key head.
Replacing the battery or lamp
Insert a coin into the slot on the top of the key head and pry up the top of the head.
Replace the battery or bulb. Replacement batteries and bulbs are available from your Volkswagen service partner.

Backup Key C fits all locks.
We recommend keeping the backup key in your wallet and using it only if your regular key is lost.
On a plastic keychain the numbers and the hidden secret code of the anti-theft system required for ordering spare keys are found. Only on the basis of these numbers can spare keys be ordered from a Volkswagen service centre.
Vehicle locking and unlocking control locations
Outside: front doors, trunk lid.
Inside: door lock button and central lock control button in the driver's door handle.
If moving the door lock button down does not lock the other doors, you must lift the lock button up and press it again.
To unlock the car, turn the key to the unlock position in the lock of one of the front doors or in the lock of the luggage compartment.
All door lock buttons rise.
In the event of failure of the central locking system, all doors and the trunk are opened and closed with the key.
Note: If the central lock fails, the rear doors cannot be unlocked from the outside.
For locking the car, turn the key once to the locking position in one of the front doors or the luggage compartment. All doors and the luggage compartment will be locked.
The central lock can be operated from the driver's door if it closes before the other doors.
If the driver's door is open, it cannot be closed using the central lock.
After turning on the ignition with the central lock, you cannot close the doors on the front passenger side, you can only open them.
Warning: No one, especially small children, should be left in a car locked from the outside, as the doors cannot be opened from the inside. This is especially important when using cars with electric windows, as in this case the windows cannot be opened either.
On vehicles equipped with electric windows or a power sliding/tilting roof panel, door windows or the sunroof that are left open can be closed centrally by holding the key in the lock position until all door windows and the sunroof are completely closed.
The doors can also be locked by pressing the lock buttons.
