To locate a break in the rear defroster wire, turn on the ignition and the rear defroster switch.

Connect one lead of the voltmeter to «weight» car, and wrap the second terminal with foil and move along the heater conductor (pic. 18–68).
Pic. 18–69. Using a Voltmeter to Locate a Broken Rear Defroster Wire
Connect a voltmeter lead to the center of each rear defroster wire. If the voltmeter shows a voltage of about 5 V, then the heater conductor is good. If the voltage on the voltmeter is 0 or 12 V, the heater conductor is broken (pic. 18–69).
Pic. 18–70. Using a voltmeter to locate a break in the rear window defroster conductor
To locate the break in the heater conductor, connect one lead of the voltmeter to the positive terminal of the heater, and move the other along the conductor of the heater from the side of the negative terminal of the heater. The point at which the voltage shown by the voltmeter drops to zero is where the heater conductor breaks (pic. 18–70).
